Merihaka noir

Analog black and white is just special. Whether it be the grain, the grit or the unpredictable imperfections, I can’t quite say, but it just feels good. I like color films, too, but they have a different way about them and they are almost unreasonably expensive these days. So, for the most part, the color that I shoot is digital.

That said, recently I’ve decided to scan the whole frame when I do shoot film - sprocket holes and all - so as to really preserve that feeling of what it means to have an exposed photo on silver emulsion. Also, whatever mistakes I make in agitation or drying, they’ll show up even more. I like that, I make a lot of mistakes.

I’ve been shooting black and white film for years yet it still feels like magic every time I pull out that film from the developing tank or see that image slowly appear on photographic paper.

Kudos to my friend with the good hair, Benjamin, for being the model for these. It was stupid cold.

Shot with: Ricoh GR1 loaded with Fomapan 200, developed in Ilfosol 3, scanned.
